This Tuesday, March 24, 2020, a man died of hantavirus in China while he was on a bus.
Since then, many have feared it was a new epidemic. Except that, unlike the coronavirus which affects the whole world at the moment, this virus is perfectly known and understood by the scientific community and it has absolutely nothing to do with Covid-19.
To be infected with hantavirus, you must be in direct contact with the urine, faeces or saliva of an infected rodent. There is no human-to-human transmission (from one human being to another)!
In fact, when he died, the man was on a train, the other 32 passengers were screened and none was contaminated.
If the world is today in the midst of a pandemic, it is because the coronavirus is transmitted very quickly and very easily between humans. In the current state of knowledge, no hantavirus has the contagiousness of Covid-19. A new epidemic is therefore not to be feared.
