When used properly, certain herbs help improve mood and reduce nervous tension. They are a precious help in case of mild “depression”. Here are 2 examples.
1. Calming properties of lavender.
- Used in aromatherapy to calm anxiety: its properties are now validated by science. The results of some studies indicate that inhaling lavender essential oil can calm anxiety and promote the emergence of a feeling of calm and well-being in many stressful situations: tests have been performed in dental office waiting rooms and intensive care units, for example. Other studies have shown that inhaling lavender has the effect of decreasing the secretion of a stress hormone, cortisol.
- Dosage: to calm anxiety, in massage, four drops of lavender essential oil for 10 millilitres (2 teaspoons) of base oil for massage, to be applied to the shoulders and temples; in inhalation, 4 drops of essential oil for 20 millilitres (almost 3 tablespoons) of hot water (use a perfume burner, for example). Lavender can also be taken as an infusion (1 to 1 1/2 grams, or 1/2 teaspoon of dried flowers, per cup), at the rate of 2 cups a day and a cup at bedtime.
